Press Release – ISPO Conference Brisbane 2018

Brisbane marine pilots tender 2018
Brisbane Marine Pilots are hosting the annual international ISPO conference and meetings in Brisbane on Wednesday 17 & Thursday 18 October 2018. The venue is the Stamford Plaza Brisbane. There will be around 100 international and Australian attendees.

Brisbane Marine Pilots (BMP) were certified to the International Standard for maritime Pilot Organizations (ISPO) in 2012 and joined the International Users Group (IUG) in the same year.

The Standard
The ISPO is a standard of best practice for pilots and pilot organizations, improving safety and quality. It provides self-regulation and transparency in pilotage standards to all port related stakeholders. It is a standard written by pilots for pilots. (http://www.ispo-standard.com).

The International User Group
Since 2005, 19 pilotage organizations from around the world have been certified to the ISPO. These organizations are members of the International User Group (IUG). The IUG is responsible for maintaining and developing the standard including all supporting documents.

Each year the IUG meet to review new legislation, regulations and standards, technical developments and best practice of maritime pilot organizations. Presentations on these topics are provided at the annual conference for IUG members, their stakeholders and pilotage organizations interested in becoming certified to ISPO. At the conference, the IUG members will meet to review and approve any updates required to be made to the standard. Following any update to the standard, the certified organizations are checked for compliance by a recognised classification society.

Collaboration and innovation
“Brisbane Marine Pilots are proud of our long history of collaboration and innovation with the Brisbane port community particularly the state regulator and the port operator, to provide safe passage of shipping through our port” said Captain Geoffrey Dawson, Chairman of Brisbane Marine Pilots.

“The ISPO focus on improving safety and quality and providing transparency in pilotage standards to all port related stakeholders compliments the way we operate at BMP” he said. He also noted that “Being members of the IUG assists us to pursue a position in pilotage that is recognised as truly world leading”.

Captain Dawson went on to say, “We look forward to meeting with other likeminded pilotage organization representatives and port stakeholders from around the world at the conference here in Brisbane”
Brisbane Marine Pilots are very grateful to the conference sponsors; Queensland Government, Port of Brisbane P/L, DHI Water & Environment Pty Ltd, Trelleborg Marine Systems and SmartShip Marine Simulations.
